As the principal designer of an established design and build company, James Thia has worked with all sorts of tiles in his career for more than two decades. Hence, when it comes to renovating his own home in USJ, James has no second thoughts about choosing Feruni tiles.
“You cannot go wrong with Feruni tiles,” he says. “With Feruni, I’m assured of the quality of the tiles and there is so much variety to select from.” Indeed, having a wide spectrum of choices is a very important factor for James to achieve the desired look and feel for his five-bedroom, five-bathroom home.
Unlike working on projects for his clients, James didn’t have a pre-determined design plan for his home. Instead, he approached the project as an artist who lets his creativity flow when he is faced with a blank canvas. His only guiding inspiration was to recreate a natural resort ambiance as he worked from room to room. Feruni tiles were the obvious choice to help him achieve this, as the variety of tiles can be seamlessly mixed and matched to fit into various applications.
The end result was a beautiful composition of wood, cement and stone material finishes complemented with natural and earthy tones. James says, “The industry is all about artistry and all these natural elements combine together to create a natural concept within an urban setting.”
From outdoor to indoor, Feruni tiles were James’ material of choice for wall and floor surfaces. Feruni décor tiles were selected for the wall while a natural stone look was used for the floor. In the semi-outdoor courtyard, James created a cosy nook to rest and relax after a long day. Cement wall finishing and a wooden table made from reclaimed wood are mixed with the Azulej series of tiles from Feruni’s Designer Collection.
Inside, the ground floor of the house has an open layout which features a blend of textures and tones. For instance, James selected Feruni’s Travertino series for the dry kitchen and powder room walls to recreate the effect of natural travertine. He recalls, “I have used natural travertine in a project I worked on in Hong Kong and I was glad to have found tiles that look similar to it at Feruni.”
James also optimised the versatility of Feruni tiles in various areas of his home. The Azulej series, which was used as floor tiles in the courtyard, are also applied as backsplash in the wet kitchen and in the bathrooms.
One of the highlights of James’ home is the stairwell, which leads to the first and second floors. From the top, a skylight floods the stairwell with natural light, illuminating the concrete wall finishing of Feruni’s Concrete 2.0 tiles. The contrast of light with the industrial-looking material creates a surreal effect during different times of the day.
Upstairs on the first floor, all bathroom surfaces are finished with a mix-and-match of Feruni tiles to give a distinctive look to each setting. On the second floor, a family room and study area feature grey walls with timber flooring.
James is extremely happy with his choice of Feruni tiles and even more so with his buying experience at Feruni. He says, “After years of working with Feruni, I’m confident that I always receive the best professional service whenever I walk into the Feruni Retail Store. In fact, I always feel at home at the Feruni Retail Store because the Solution Consultants always spend the time to help me choose tiles without any buying obligations.”
“Overall, Feruni has been the number choice of tiles in my work. Feruni has been my problem solver and solution provider. I always believe that a successful renovation project is about creating value worth more than what you spend, and Feruni shares the same philosophy,” says James.
